SAFARI COSTS
How much does an African safari cost? Vehicles, camps and park fees

COMPARE YOUR QUOTES
What will each quote actually cost?
Use written quotes for the same dates, travellers, rooms and route. Enter all amounts in one currency. Convert them yourself before using this tool; it does not fetch exchange rates or market prices.
Extra costs always refer to the whole group and the entire trip, even if the base quote is per person. Enter 0 only when an item is included or confirmed unnecessary. If a cost is unknown, ask the operator before calculating. If adults and children have different rates, enter their combined base price as a group total.
Formula and worked example
Group total = base quote × traveller count (only for a per-person quote) + excluded park fees + excluded transport + other excluded costs. Per-person cost = group total ÷ travellers. Per-person per-day cost = group total ÷ travellers ÷ trip days. Intermediate amounts are kept in currency cents; displayed averages are rounded to two decimal places.
Illustrative numbers, not live safari prices: for two people over seven days, A quotes USD 4,000 for the group but excludes USD 600 in fees and USD 400 in transfers. A totals USD 5,000, or USD 357.14 per person per day. B quotes USD 4,800 with these items included and no other exclusions: USD 342.86 per person per day. B is USD 200 lower for the group despite its higher headline price.
A lower total does not compare guide quality, vehicle occupancy, camp location, cancellation terms or actual hours watching wildlife. Check those alongside the result. Trip days include arrival and transfer days; this average is not a price per game-drive day. Any unlisted expense remains outside the result.

What a safari quote usually includes
Park and permit prices change. Rather than relying on a list that will expire, reopen the managing authority's page before travel and ask the operator to show the current fee and payment method in the quote.
| Cost group | What it usually covers | Where quotes differ |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle and guide | Vehicle, fuel, driver-guide and transfers | Private or shared, guests per vehicle, mileage limits |
| Accommodation and meals | Camps, lodges and meals on the route | Inside or outside the park, named property or substitute |
| Park and conservancy fees | Entry, vehicle, conservation or concession fees | Residency, season and number of days |
| Domestic transport | Road transfers, small aircraft and airport services | Luggage and change conditions |
| Extra activities | Ballooning, walks, night drives and community visits | Permits, age limits and weather |
The cost difference between a private and shared vehicle
East African road safaris are often priced by vehicle. Two people in a private vehicle carry almost the full cost of the vehicle, fuel and guide. With four to six people sharing, the cost per person drops, along with window space, camera angles and control over each day.
The vehicle model alone is not enough. Ask for the maximum number of guests, whether a window seat is guaranteed, charging and refrigeration, and the replacement plan after a breakdown.

How park, outside-park and public camps are priced
An in-park camp can reduce the time spent passing through a gate at dawn and dusk. Remote water, power, food and staff transport also appear in the room price. A lodge outside the park may cost less, but the gate journey uses wildlife-watching time. A mobile camp should be in the right seasonal position for your month.
Kruger's public rest camps use a different model. Visitors can drive themselves, stay in a public camp and add official morning or night drives when needed. Accommodation, self-driving and guided activities remain separate costs.

What to prepare before asking operators for quotes
- Give exact dates, adult and child numbers, room count and the currency of your budget.
- Name one essential region and let the operator suggest the rest.
- Ask for each day's start, finish, expected drive time and actual accommodation name.
- Separate included and excluded costs, especially park fees, flights, tips and drinks.
- Before paying, check cancellation terms, insurance requirements, the receiving company and its licence.
